Frozen Car Door Lock: How to Get In Without Damage

First, work out what is actually frozen

There are three different problems that look the same at 7 a.m.:

1. The lock cylinder is frozen. The key goes in but will not turn.
2. The door seal is frozen. The car unlocks, but the door is stuck to the frame.
3. The fob battery is weak. Cold reduces battery power, so the remote does not unlock the car at all.

If the lock cylinder is frozen

• Warm the key. Hold it in your hand for a minute, insert it gently and wait a few seconds before trying to turn it. Repeat a few times.
• Use lock de-icer. A small can of de-icer sprayed into the keyhole works quickly. Keep one in your coat or bag in winter, not in the car.
• Use hand sanitizer. The alcohol lowers the freezing point. Put a little on the key blade and insert it.

If the door seal is frozen

• Push before you pull. Push firmly on the door near the handle, then pull. The pressure often cracks the ice seal.
• Try another door. The passenger side or rear doors may be less exposed to wind and freezing rain.
• Start the car remotely if you have a remote starter, and let the cabin warm for ten minutes.
• Don’t yank the handle. Door handles are plastic and snap in the cold.

If the fob battery is weak
