Lost house keys are more than an inconvenience. Depending on where and how they went missing, they can be a real security risk. The right response depends on one question: could whoever finds them work out where you live? Here is how to decide what to do.
Step 1: Retrace your steps, quickly
Check pockets, bags, your car, your workplace and the last store you visited. Call places you have been. Many keys turn up within an hour.
Step 2: Assess the risk
| Situation | Risk | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Keys lost on their own, no ID or address | Lower | Get new keys cut; consider rekeying for peace of mind |
| Keys lost with a wallet, ID, mail or car registration | High | Rekey the same day |
| Keys stolen with your bag or car | High | Rekey immediately and report the theft |
| Keys with a garage remote or labelled with your address | High | Rekey and reset the garage opener |
| Keys lost somewhere you are sure is private | Lower | Spare keys, then rekey if they don’t turn up |

Step 3: Get back inside
If you have no spare, a locksmith can open your door without damage. Tell them on the phone that the keys are lost rather than locked inside, so they can plan to rekey or cut new keys during the same visit. See Emergency Locksmith Brampton.
Step 4: Rekey instead of just copying
If there is any chance someone could connect the keys to your home, do not just cut a copy of the lost key. Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing locks so the lost keys no longer work, without replacing your hardware. It is fast and usually costs much less than new locks. - Mailbox key: community mailbox keys are handled by Canada Post.
- Work keys: tell your employer right away so they can rekey if needed.
- Building fobs: tell property management to deactivate the lost fob.
Step 6: Prevent the next time
- Keep a spare with someone you trust.
- Never label keys with your address.
- Consider a keypad deadbolt so a lost key is not an emergency. See Smart Lock Installation Brampton.

- Use a Bluetooth tracker on your key ring.
Frequently asked questions
Should I rekey if I lost my house keys?
Yes if the keys could be linked to your address, or if you are unsure. Rekeying makes the lost keys useless.
Can a locksmith make a key without the original?
Yes. They can decode the lock or rekey it to a new key.
Is rekeying cheaper than changing locks?
Usually, because you keep your existing hardware.
What about a lost mailbox key?
Community mailbox keys are handled by Canada Post.
