1. Don’t go inside if the intruder could still be there
If the door is forced, a window is smashed or you hear movement, move away and call 911. Wait for police before entering. Your belongings are replaceable; you are not.
2. Report it to Peel Regional Police
If the break-in is not in progress, report it through Peel Regional Police’s non-emergency line or online reporting. Write down the occurrence or report number. Your insurance company will ask for it.
3. Document everything before cleaning up
- Photograph the entry point: door, frame, lock, strike plate, window.
- Photograph each room as you found it.
- Make a list of missing items, with serial numbers, receipts or photos if you have them.
- Note anything the intruder touched or moved.
4. Call your insurance company
Ask whether they want an adjuster to see the damage before repairs, what documentation they need, and whether emergency securing is covered. Keep every receipt from this point forward.
5. Secure the property the same day

6. Rekey if keys, ID or your car were taken

7. Change passwords and cancel cards
If laptops, phones or documents were stolen, change important passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and contact your bank and card issuers.
8. Strengthen the weak point
Most residential break-ins through doors defeat the frame, not the lock. When you repair, upgrade:
- Three-inch screws in strike plates and hinges
- Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolts on every exterior door
- A deadbolt on the garage-to-house door
- A secondary lock or bar on sliding patio doors
